After injuring his hand during Acura Grand Prix weekend, seven-time NASCAR champ expecting to take take part in INDYCAR test at Indianapolis Motor Speedway April 20-21.
Jimmie Johnson of The American Legion INDYCAR program has proven to be a real trooper during his latest battle with adversity.
The seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion and driver of the No. 48 Carvana/American Legion Honda for Chip Ganassi Racing had outpatient surgery Monday night in Charlotte, N.C.
According to a release from the team and Johnson’s social media, the surgery was performed by Dr. Glenn Gaston, Hand and Upper Extremity Fellowship Director at OrthoCarolina. Johnson is expected to make a complete recovery and plans to participate in the INDYCAR test at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on April 20-21. Johnson finished 20th after completing 73 of 85 laps last weekend at Long Beach with his hand in a carbon fiber splint. He is currently 14th in the 2022 NTT INDYCAR Series point standings after three events, with a best finish of sixth at Texas Motor Speedway on March 20.
Johnson experienced the crash in Friday’s practice session for the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach. He crashed into a tire barrier and the snap of the wheel broke his hand near the “pinky” finger. A carbon fiber splint was created that allowed Johnson to compete the rest of the weekend, but he also crashed in Saturday morning’s practice session and with 10 laps to go in Sunday’s race.
Johnson tweeted the following message:
“From Long Beach to the operation room. Good news is I plan to be ready for the @IMS (Indianapolis Motor Speedway) test in 9 days and Barber (Motorsports Park) on May 1st. Thank you to all the medical staff involved.”
