The 28th annual tournament was held on the four-acre pond at Post 482 in Scio.
American Legion Post 482 in Scio, Ohio, held its 28th annual Kids Fishing Tournament July 25 where more than 150 kids enjoyed a morning of fishing with their parents and post members.
“This event provides a wonderful experience for the children and families in the surrounding area,” said Mike Bower, finance officer for Post 482.
The fishing tournament is for kids aged 15 and under. Each participant received a commemorative T-shirt, new fishing pole, bait and tackle, lunch and were entered to win a variety of prizes.
Post 482 has a four-acre pond stocked with bass, hybrid bluegill, rockfish and more. For the youth participants, parents can bait hooks, cast out and remove hooks but the child must set the hook and reel in. A total of 11 trophies were awarded – by boys and girls age groups – to the first fish caught, the largest fish caught and the most fish caught.
Following the tournament, the children, parents and Legion Family members enjoyed a lunch of hot dogs, hamburgers and chips. And one boy and one girl from each age group had their name drawn to win one of the 16 bicycles that were given away.
Additionally, a generous donor provided an opportunity for two of the older participants to have their name drawn for a fishing charter trip on Lake Erie. Bower said it’s thanks to sponsors and donors that make the annual Kids Fishing Tournament possible.
