Signing of LEGION Act a legislative victory highlighted in July membership report

The July 2019 Membership Impact Report highlights the signing of the Let Everyone Get Involved in Opportunities for National Service Act, also known as the LEGION Act; the number of VA cases prepared by national staff; new posts chartered and more.

In a significant legislative victory for The American Legion, President Trump signed the LEGION Act July 30 that declares the United States has been in a state of war since Dec. 7, 1941. The American Legion sought the declaration as a way to honor approximately 1,600 U.S. servicemembers who were killed or wounded during previously undeclared periods of war. The LEGION Act also opens the door for approximately 6 million veterans to access American Legion programs and benefits for which they previously had not been eligible.

Also in July, American Legion national staff prepared 1,298 cases for VA hearings; three posts were chartered (Arkansas Post 2021, Colorado Post 1882 and Montana Post 140); 196 American Legion, Sons of The American Legion and Auxiliary members completed the Basic Training online leadership education module; and National Headquarters disbursed $131,855 in youth scholarships.
