December Impact: Legion leads tornado relief efforts

The tornado outbreak of Dec. 10-11 devastated multiple communities in Kentucky and nearby states. American Legion posts from as far away as Rhode Island sent supplies and funds to communities, and Indiana Legionnaires from the 732-population town of Elberfeld made a major impact, filling two semi-trailers with food, clothing, tools, chainsaws, generators and more for their neighbors in need.

It was a big month for National Emergency Fund distributions, Operation Comfort Warriors assistance, youth scholarships and recognition for Scouting achievements.

Meanwhile, in Washington, the Legion’s legislative team worked to get the Troops to Teachers program re-installed in the new defense bill after it had been previously withdrawn, and the Employment and Education Division called for changes amid alarming trends for the VA Home Loan Program.
