Union Soldiers' Memorial, Birmingham, Alabama

This section of Oak Hill Cemetery honors Union soldiers and was established in 1891 by the Grand Army of the Republic fraternal organization. It was vandalized in 1937 and restored in 2019 with funds raised by the National Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. Eleven soldiers from eight states, as well as one widow of a soldier, are buried in the plot. On May 19, 2019, the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW) rededicated the 1891 Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) monument. This monument was vandalized in the 1930s and has just been restored. The National Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil furnished the funds for the restoration and the local chapter Major General John T. Croxton, Camp 17 was in charge of the restoration. There are eleven Union soldiers buried near the monument and one widow. In addition to the Union soldiers buried near the monument there are an additional twenty- six buried throughout the cemetery. Soldiers from eight states are buried here.
