The Flight 93 Memorial

This memorial is considered the first 9/11 memorial designed, completed and built in the world. The memorial was dedicated in 2007. It is located in the San Francisco Bay Area in the City of Union City, California. The co-designer and build manager is Michael L. Emerson, a U.S. Marine and PUFL of the American Legion. Local American Legion Posts supported and donated to the memorial. Emerson originated the idea since United Airlines Flight 93's original destination was San Francisco Airport and he wanted to build a memorial in the San Francisco Bay Area to honor and remember the Heroes who fought back. These heroes were able to stop the high-jackers, they crashed into an empty field in Pennsylvania and not into the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C.. This is the first memorial that Emerson designed and built. The land, the materials and the labor were donated. Cash donations of over $28,000 came in and were donated to the City of Union City, California to put into a trust fund to care for and maintain the memorial. After this memorial was dedicated the families of Flight 93 and the National Park service asked Emerson to help them build the National Flight 93 Memorial at the crash site in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
