Point Pedernales/Honda Point Memorial

Point Pedernales/Honda Point Memorial

A large brass propeller removed from USS Delphy, which ran aground during the Sept. 8, 1923 "Honda Point Disaster," the largest peacetime loss of Navy ships in U.S. history. That night, 14 Clemson-class ships from Destroyer Squadron 11, with Delphy as the commander's flagship, were traveling from San Francisco to Los Angeles, and due to a navigation error turned toward shore prior to reaching the Santa Barbara Channel. 23 sailors were killed and seven ships were a total loss, while two others suffered minor damage.
