The Yorba Linda Veterans Memorial is the first veterans memorial to establish a Gold Star Walkway in Orange County and the City of Yorba Linda, California honoring those veterans who gave their lives starting on 9-11. The Monument Committee was co-chaired by American Legion Commander Clay Baxter, Commander Post 679 Richard M. Nixon, Yorba Linda and VFW Placentia-Yorba Linda Commander and American Legion member Irv Gold. As many as 15 residents of the city joined the committee and raised funds to create and install the Yorba Linda Veterans Memorial. The city-owned park was renamed to Veterans Park through the efforts of the committee members and veterans and the park was donated to the YLVMA-Yorba Linda Veterans Memorial Association. The YLVMA park's original design was created by a 17-year-old high school student who won the design contest and competed against professional designers. The veterans memorial was built by a Gold Star father Gary Bratain, a members of the Sons of the American Legion whose son was a resident of Yorba Linda who lost his life in Iraq. There were no public funds received to build the park only donations of bricks and contributions from the public, volunteer workers, and volunteer contractors. Upon completion of the Yorba Linda Veterans Memorial the park was donated to the city which now maintains the park facilities. Flag education ceremonies are held every Thursday at 6pm to educate all who may be interested. Major recognition ceremonies are held twice a year on Memorial Day and Veterans Day to honor all veterans and give special recognition of new Gold Star families by placing walkway bricks on the special walkway for those who may have given their lives since the previous honoring ceremonies. Other walkways have been created to honor all veterans from all wars and/or who have served our great country.
