The plight of our nation's homeless veterans may not be well known, but on any given night there are over 40,000 veterans living on the street. The reasons for this statistic are depression, life changes, mental health issues, and many others. Homelessness of our nation's veterans is not tied to any group. The Cherokee County Homeless Veterans Program, under the direction of former Army Captain Jim Lindenmayer, has supported both enlisted and officers from every branch of the service, with the exception of the Coast Guard, as well as both male and female veterans and veterans with families. The creation of a homeless veterans monument could be viewed as both a cause and a place of honor to showcase the issue. The design depicts both a male and female homeless veteran. The inspiration for the female statue came about as a result of the Cherokee County Homeless Veterans Program having helped get a female Marine who suffered from homelessness for 31 years.
