Monument of Orpheus, known as the Greek mythological hero of music and poetry, stands as a dedication to Francis Scott Key and the soldiers and sailors who took part in the Battle of North Point and the defense of Fort McHenry during the War of 1812. Sculptor Charles H. Niehaus' 'Orpheus with the Awkward Foot' was commissioned to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the writing of 'The Star-Spangled Banner.' Originally scheduled to be completed by 1914, the monument wasn't erected until 1922 due to World War I. The monument was dedicated on Flag Day, June 14, 1922 by President Warren G. Harding. Presently, the Orpheus monument stands just inside the park's main gate, surrounded by a grove of trees.
