The Hiker

This monument is a statue of an infantry soldier in slouch hat and tropical uniform holding a Krag-Jorgenson rifle. On the pedestal are two plaques. One has a picture of a battleship (the Maine?), a soldier, a sailor and a kneeling woman (representing Cuba?) and the names of the places where there was fighting. The other plaque has information about the installation. It honors GIs who served during the War with Spain, Philippine Insurrection and China Relief Expedition (Boxer Rebellion) 1898-1902. Fifty were made and placed around the country. They were designed by Theo Alice Ruggles Kitson. In 1895 she was the first woman admitted to the National Sculpture Society.
