Fred McLeod (Schuyler, Nebraska Post 47's namesake) was honored with a bronze bust placed at the Colfax County Courthouse. McLeod enlisted in August 1917 - he and other members of the 5th Marine Corps were killed in the Battle of Belleau Wood near Thierry, France. McLeod died June 16, 1918, at the age of 31 and was buried in France. His remains were returned to his hometown in 1921 and buried in Schuyler Cemetery.
