Corporal Philip A. Reynolds was killed in action in 1950, protecting a fellow Marine under enemy fire during the Korean war. Corporal Reynolds was posthumously awarded the Silver Star and the Purple Heart. For his heroism, members of the Freehold, NJ Marine Corps League, named for Corporal Reynolds, lobbied for the dedication of a local bridge to be named in his honor. Through private fundraising efforts, spearheaded by league member Dan Savino, money was raised to provide the signs. No state funding was received. At the bridge dedication Senator Jennifer Beck, who along with Assemblywoman Caroline Casagrande introduced the bill to authorize the name change, said: "We have so many brave men and women who have given their lives for our country and it speaks very highly of Cpl. Reynolds' memory that all these years later he is being honored by the very detachment that bears his name. It is because of their hard work and dedication that this bill will be signed into law, while not asking for a dime of funding from the state."
