The memorial was built from a huge granite mill stone which as been in the community for more than half a century. The stone symbolizes the old-time flour milling industry which helped found the village in its present site at the foot of Hemlock Lake. The stone which commemorates the service and sacrifice of World War II veterans, especially honors Claude Abbey, Carl Drain and Elbert Knapp, the three service men from the community who were killed in service.
