The Cherokee Warrior Memorial is a veteran’s memorial located on the grounds of the Cherokee Nation headquarters. The Cherokee Nation honored more than 200 military veterans by hosting a breakfast and unveiling the new Cherokee Warrior Memorial Tuesday November 11, 2005 for Veterans Day. The 12-foot-tall black granite Cherokee Warrior Memorial replaces a decade-old, failing structure with a durable, granite memorial that reads, “A grateful Cherokee Nation dedicates this memorial to all Cherokee men and women, both living and dead, who have defended their families, their people and their homeland.” These names are carved in stone forever. POW-MIA, you are not forgotten” on the other. The words are etched in both Cherokee syllabary and English. Behind the wall stand ten flag poles: at top the US flag, flanked by the POW-MIA flag and Cherokee Nation flag. The remaining seven include all branched of the US military as well as those of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and United Keetoowah Band.
