LCpl Lamont N. Wilson Memorial Highway
The Memorial Highway is a 2-mile, 4-lane divided segment of Interstate Highway I-44, north of the city of Lawton, Oklahoma. It runs from the vicinity of the Key Gate exit to the Fort Sill Military Reservation, north for 2 miles. It was designated a Memorial Highway in 2014, in honor of Lance Corporal (LCpl) Lamont Noel Wilson, of Lawton, a member of the United States Marine Corps (USMC). He began his military service when he enlisted in the USMC in June, 2003. He was stationed at Camp Pendleton, California before deploying overseas to Iraq, where he served as a member of the 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force. LCpl Wilson was killed in action on September 6, 2004, during a car bombing incident in the First Battle of Fallujah in Al Anbar Province, while supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom, during the Global War on Terrorism. He was 20 years old. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart.
