The Tower of Memories, Memorial Park Cemetery

The Tower of Memories, Memorial Park Cemetery
American Legion Post 35, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma laid the cornerstone for the Tower of Memories on Armistice Day, 1928 in Memorial Park Cemetery. Completed in 1929, the 72-foot tall tower is made of dressed limestone. From 1929 until the late 1970's, a Carillion was located in the top of the tower. The bells would be played on Sunday afternoons and on holidays. By the late 1970's, the Carillion needed major repair and was removed. It has been replaced by a digital system reproducing the original Carillion sound. The Avenue leading to the Tower is lined with flowers and a reflecting pool in the center. In 1935, famed aviator and aviation pioneer Wiley Post was buried just to the southeast of the Tower of Memories after he died along with Will Rogers in a crash at Point Barrow, AK. Close to the entrance of this Cemetery is another Memorial, more fully described with photographs in a separate listing, erected by the Department of Oklahoma in honor of one of its earliest and longtime Department Service Officers, Charles B. Dollarhide, a member of the American Expeditionary Force in World War I. https://goo.gl/maps/SGHho9NHhm22
