Flagstone monument with bronze plaques honoring the U.S. Army Second Division’s service in World War I. This unit was unique in American military history in that one of its three regiments consisted of U.S. Marines. Moreover. on two occasions the entire division was commanded by a Marine, the legendary Maj. Gen. John A. Lejeune. The Second Division fought in the battles of Aisne, Belleau Wood, Aisne-Marne, Saint Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne. It was the most decorated division of the American Expeditionary Force with two soldiers, six Marines and six sailors awarded the Medal of Honor.
