Bedford Veterans Grove

A park directly across from the Bedford County Courthouse containing three different memorials for World War II, Korea and Vietnam. All of them are honor roll-style monuments of black reflexive granite. containing the names of all Bedford County residents who died in the respective wars along with the date and location of their demise. The World War II monument has a Morse Code message carved into the capstone. It features a bronze statue designed by Bedford County artist Wayne Hyde. The final element is a statue of Bedford County Medal of Honor recipient Bob Hartsock. On Feb. 23, 1969, Hartsock threw himself on a satchel bomb flung by a North Vietnamese soldier, saving the life of a fellow soldier. A member of the U.S. Army Special Forces, he was the only dog handler to receive the Medal of Honor in Vietnam. His dog, Duke, is also portrayed in the statuary created by Hyde.
