Hope Furnace Cannon Memorial

Hope Furnace Cannon Memorial
The cannon, which has passed ownership several times, is the only pre-Revolutionary War cannon in Rhode Island cast by the Hope Furnace Foundry. The cannon was reportedly found in 1910 in Hope Lake by a fisherman who kept it in his barn. Later the cannon was dedicated to the Crompton School in West Warwick in 1930. Hope Furnace, located in the village of Hope in Scituate, was Rhode Island's First iron works foundry and was a major producer of war implements during the revolutionary war. The foundry also cast cannons for the USS Constitution or "Old Ironsides". The famous Brown Brothers, John, Joseph, Nicholas and Moses were the owners of the foundry. Stephen Hopkins, another partner in the foundry, was a signer of the Declaration of Independence. The cannon is dedicated to the men and women of the Village of Hope who served their country in times of conflict. Unfortunately, time and weather have caused deterioration to the cannon memorial. Recognizing the importance of the cannon as a historical artifact to the history of Hope Village, Scituate, and Rhode Island, and to preserve it for future generations, the Hope Furnace Cannon Refurshing Committee was formed. With the combined effort of Hope Library, The American Legion Scituate Post 19, and the Hope Historical Society, the cannon was refurbished and re-dedicated on Veteran's Day, November 11, 2017.
