Memorial Stone at Green Hill Cemetery, Buena Vista

Memorial Stone at Green Hill Cemetery, Buena Vista

The memorial stone is dedicated to veterans of all wars past and present. It was installed sometime in November 1967. It was estimated to cost between $1,800 and $5,000. C.L. Hamrick Memorials LLC, Lexington, Va., installed the memorial stone in the Green Hill Cemetery on land donated by the City of Buena Vista, Va. The tombstone memorial was dedicated on Sunday, June 2, 1968, at a Memorial Day service. The granite tombstone memorial bears the emblem of American Legion Post 126 as well as the branches of the United States military services (Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force). It is located just below the flagpole area of the cemetery. It is in good condition. Close to 80 Civil War veterans are buried there, as well as veterans who were sent to various countries between wars to help put down revolts and insurrections.

Yearly, Floyd-Davidson American Legion Post 126 members have to clean the lichen off it prior to the Memorial Day services. Buena Vista City employees mow around the memorial stone, but Post 126 members keep the stone cleared of grass and bee nests.
