Sheboygan County Veterans Memorial

Sheboygan County Veterans Memorial

The design utilizes seven black granite stones in the form of monoliths. Each is 6 feet high, 5 feet wide and 10 inches thick. The stones are placed under seven large concrete arches that bear the emblems for the branches of service. Each arch is approximately 30 feet high and 10 feet wide. Six of the stones, arranged in a semicircle, bear inscriptions of the names of the fallen soldiers. They are arranged in chronological order, from left to right, by the dates of the wars (from the Civil War to the Global War on Terror). There is also a seventh stone, placed in the center. This monolith is inscribed with a quote from Franklin D. Roosevelt's proclamation of Dec. 15, 1941, as Bill of Rights Day: “Those who have long enjoyed such privileges as we enjoy forget in time that men have died to win them.” Additional two-sided marble walls have been added to allow space for deceased and living veterans' names to be added. Currently there are more than 4,300 names inscribed on the walls. The peaceful grounds also have a Blue Star Memorial garden along with a Gold Star Memorial garden.
