How many Junior Shooting Sports alumni have competed in the Olympics?

Two. Michael Douglass of Illinois, who won the 1993 American Legion Junior 3-Position Air Rifle National Championship Precision category title, competed in the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney; and Jamie Beyerle of Pennsylvania, who won the 2002 national championship Precision category title, competed in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. She is also slated to compete in the London games later this summer. Read an interview with Beyerle here.

Although she did not compete in the Legion’s Junior 3-Position Air Rifle National Championship, Launi Meili of Washington state – who earned a gold medal at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona – has a connection: much of her marksmanship training came from Legionnaires in her hometown of Cheney.

Given that the yearly championships are held at the USA Shooting Range Facilities at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. – where the U.S. Olympic team trains and practices – it is to be hoped that more Shooting Sports alumni end up representing their country on the biggest stage of them all.
