OCW treats Navy unit in San Diego

Operation Comfort Warriors (OCW) provided a cook-out style lunch Wednesday for hundreds of servicemembers and their caregivers at the warrior transition battalion aboard Naval Medical Center San Diego. Each participant received an OCW cap and a chance to win four tickets to an upcoming San Diego Chargers home football game.

American Legion Family members from the Department of California and OCW coordinator James Ellison greeted the troops and helped pass out 200 hamburgers, 150 brats and side dishes such as potato salad, cookies and drinks. The meat was cooked on a grill presented to the WTB by OCW a few weeks ago, Ellison said.

In addition to the food, hats and Chargers tickets, OCW presented two Playstation Vita gaming systems and games to assist the wounded warriors in their rehabilitation.

The OCW program was created to provide "nonessential" items that help wounded warriors’ recovery such as loose-fitting clothing, equipment for sports adaptive therapy programs and entertainment devices. All donations to OCW are used to purchase such items for wounded warriors.

Future deliveries of gifts are in the works for facilities in New Mexico, Kansas and elsewhere.
