Riders gear up for Legacy Run

Nearly 300 motorcycle riders, passengers and support staff will roar out of Indianapolis on Aug. 18 on the fourth annual American Legion Legacy Run. The event raises scholarship money for children of U.S. servicemembers who have died on active duty since Sept. 11, 2001. The Legacy Run will loop through seven states and end in Louisville, Ky., Aug. 21, at the Legion's 91st National Convention.

Stops along the 1,200-mile route include Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio and the Flight 93 National Memorial in Somerset County, Pa. Riders will post up-to-the-minute reports via Twitter, along with adding entries and photos to blog sites.

It's not too late to join the fun and register for the 2009 Legacy Run. The fee is $35 for registrations postmarked on or before Aug. 1. Late registration fee is $50. Each registrant will receive a patch set and registration materials, even if he or she cannot participate in the ride.

To register, go to www.legion.org. To contribute, send a check to The American Legion Legacy Run, P.O. Box 1055, Indianapolis, IN 46206.

Since the first Legacy Run in 2006, the event has raised more than $1 million for the scholarship fund; the 2009 goal is $400,000.
