American Legion to conduct first BASE visit

The American Legion will conduct its first Base Assessment and Servicemember Experience (BASE) program visit at Marine Corps Air Station Yuma (Ariz.) during the week of Oct. 23.

In 2022, The American Legion created the BASE program to address quality of life matters that affect servicemembers and their families.

Modeled after the Legion’s long-running System Worth Saving visits to VA health-care facilities, the BASE program begins with a town hall on Oct. 23. The meeting will include servicemembers stationed at Yuma, base leadership and representatives from The American Legion.

The intent of these visits is to work with the Department of Defense and congressional leaders to foster a constructive dialogue on improving quality-of-life conditions for military members and their families. By sharing everyday experiences, town hall participants can help shape legislation that is impactful and can contribute to improvements or solutions in Yuma and throughout the military community.  

American Legion volunteers from the Department of Arizona, including National Security Commission Chairman Matthew Shuman, and headquarters staff will also meet with base leadership and tour the facility. Topics of discussion are expected to include:

·       Pay and benefits.

·       Exploring barracks and housing solutions.

·       Access to quality health care.

·       Family support programs.

·       Transition and employment programs.

·       Community relations and volunteer programs.
