8 SAL detachments set all-time membership highs in 2020

Eight Sons of The American Legion detachments achieved all-time highs for membership in 2020.

The detachments of Puerto Rico, South Dakota, Mississippi, North Carolina, Iowa, Wisconsin, Oklahoma, and South Carolina reached all-time highs in membership. Those eight and 12 other detachments — Hawaii, Philippines, Idaho, Alabama, Louisiana, France, Montana, Florida, Georgia, Arizona, Tennessee, and Illinois — achieved 100 percent membership by Dec. 31.

As of Dec. 31, 2020, there were 363,313 members of the SAL, down from 375,540 at the end of 2019 — a 3.3 percent decrease in total membership that was likely in large part due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 2020 membership renewal rate was 87.09 percent, with 327,051 renewals reported as of Dec. 31.

Upcoming SAL membership target dates are:

  • Feb. 10, 75 percent.

  • March 10, 80 percent.

  • April 14, 90 percent.

  • May 12, 100 percent.

  • July 28, 105 percent.
