Polytrauma rehab facility opens in D.C.

American Legion Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation Division Deputy Director Ian de Planque recently attended the ribbon-cutting opening ceremonies at the Washington, D.C., VA Medical Center’s Independence Way rehabilitation facility on behalf of The American Legion.

The new facility is a pilot center to assist polytrauma patients with reintegration into all aspects of society. The center features real life replica simulations of such diverse facilities as Metro transit centers, grocery stores, neighborhood environments with brick paths and porch steps, and ATM banking centers. The center is designed to provide accurate simulation to prepare severely disabled veterans for reintegration into the many facets of society outside the rehabilitation environment.
