My father, Paul Mitchell, was an artilleryman in the rainbow division in World War I.

I can remember, as if it were yesterday, him singing, in his good tenor voice, the Artillery song as follows:

Over hill, over dale/ as we hit the dusty trail/ and those caissons go rolling along.
In and out, right about/ shout out your numbers loud and strong/ for it’s hi hi he in the field.
artillery/And where ‘er you go you will always know/ that those caissons are rolling along.
