Michael W. Westergren was elected as a national vice commander of The American Legion during the 107th National Convention in Louisville, Ky., on Sept. 3, 2026.
Westergren graduated from Kentridge High School in Kent, Wash., in 1977 and joined the Air Force shortly afterward. During his enlistment he earned multiple Air Force Commendation medals along with the Meritorious Service Medal. He served as a heavy airlift maintenance technician on C-141 and C-130 aircraft and as a Quality Control inspector. After his retirement, he earned a bachelor of science in education and taught mathematics.
Westergren is a charter member of Post 91 in Beebe, Ark., since 2005, and has served in many positions within the organization including local post commander, department (state) commander, and National Executive Committee member. He has also served on several state and national committees including a seven-year term as the national chairman of the Committee on Youth Education. He is also an active member of the Sons of The American Legion and the American legion Riders in Post 91.
His hobbies include fishing, woodworking, and riding and working on motorcycles. He has been participating in the American Legion Legacy Run since 2019 riding either his Harley Davidson Heritage Softail or Road Glide. While serving on the Youth Education Committee, Westergren coordinated with the schools along the Legacy Run route to ensure young people knew the purpose and significance of the event.
Westergren has been married to his wife, Carol, since 2005. They both enjoy traveling, attending Legion events, and spending time with their grandkids.
