LaMoure’s victory sends them into a championship game rematch on Sunday with Glenwood/Lowry (Minn.)
Game 6 of the Centennial Classic will look a lot like Game 1 — but LaMoure (N.D.) Post 19 will be hoping for a reversal of fortune.
LaMoure rallied with two runs in the top of the seventh inning to defeat Broken Bow (Neb.) Post 126 in Game 5 of the Centennial Classic on Saturday night in Milbank, S.D., sending LaMoure into Sunday’s championship game.
They’ll face Glenwood/Lowry (Minn.) Posts 187/253 at 11:30 a.m. CDT on Sunday in a winner-take-all matchup, a rematch of the Minnesotans’ 10-2 win in Friday’s tournament opener.
“We know we’re playing a dang good team; our pitching’s getting a little thin,” LaMoure head coach Jason Thielges said. “We’ll see what happens there.”
LaMoure can take some positives out of their two performances Saturday.
In the day’s opener, an elimination game against the host team from Milbank Post 9, LaMoure won 8-3 to stay alive in the tournament.
Glenwood/Lowry battled past Broken Bow in Game 4 to secure their spot in the championship game and send the Nebraskans into the Game 5 matchup with LaMoure.
In Game 5, Broken Bow starting pitcher Kayden Record staked himself to a 2-0 lead when his single scored Coy Wardyn and Dom Nowak.
Mason Warcken’s single in the top of third drove in Colby Thielges to cut the lead to 2-1, but it looked like the Broken Bow team had just enough offense and pitching to hold on for the win.
But two errors in the top of the seventh allowed Colby Thielges to score the tying run and Warcken to score what proved to be the winning run, making them the first designated visiting team to win in the Centennial Classic.
“We need a couple wins, we’ve kind of been struggling a little bit throughout the year, and being down on the scoreboard and coming back in that last inning in this last game especially, we needed something positive to happen,” Jason Thielges said.
