Community Veterans Memorial, Munster: “a 6.5 acre park located at 9710 Calumet Ave. … open dawn to dusk, weather permitting. Admission is free. Memorial Mission: To Remember those who participated in the great wars of the 20th Century – World Wars I and II, Korea, Vietnam and Desert Storm ... those killed and those who survived, their stories and their history … To Educate those who live today … about the reality of war, not the heroics … the suffering of war … and its repeating history … To Challenge those who shape the future … to break the repetition of violence … to imagine and hope for peace.”
The Bartholomew County Memorial for Veterans, Columbus: “a tribute to those living and dead who answered the nation's call in the conflicts of the twentieth century. There are 25 limestone pillars arranged in a 5x5 grid, 40 foot tall. The interior walls of the stones are filled with many inscriptions, including many letters to home from our brave heroes that perished during battle. These intimate looks into their lives brings home the reality of war.”
USS Indianapolis (CA-35) National Memorial, Indianapolis: “dedicated to the officers and men of the United States Heavy Cruiser torpedoed and sunk during the closing days of World War II in the Pacific. The memorial is an outdoor site and is available to the public 24 hours a day, seven days a week. An image of Indianapolis is engraved on the north side of the monument. Engraved on the south face of the monument are the names of the ship's company and one passenger who made up her final crew. Small crosses adjacent some names indicate those who perished in the sinking of the vessel.”
Veterans Plaza at Allen County War Memorial Coliseum, Fort Wayne: “brings together the Korean War-era F-84F Thunderstreak airplane, an eternal flame, the anchor from USS Indiana and other memorials all together in one place at the northwest corner of the property. Veterans Plaza, in conjunction with the Memorial Hall at the coliseum, honors soldiers from Allen County who fought in the following wars: WWI, WWII, Vietnam War, Korean War, Persian Gulf War and American Civil War. The coliseum hosts annual events to honor local veterans and fallen soldiers on Memorial Day, Veterans Day and Pearl Harbor Day. Each memorial was installed on a different date, but the plaza was officially dedicated in a ceremony on Sunday, Nov. 7, 2015.”
War of 1812, Poseyville: “located on the north side of the Poseyville Town Cemetery. Dedicated to Endicott family members who fought at the Battle of the Thames, Ontario, Canada, on Oct. 5, 1813.”
