October Impact: Legion works through shutdown

Appeals reps produce $4.5 million in retroactive benefits for veterans as the shutdown continues.

The American Legion issued multiple statements urging Congress to reach a budget solution and reopen the federal government in October. As student veterans saw their GI Bill benefits delayed, American Legion service officers and appeals representatives continued their work, free of charge, on behalf of VA benefits applicants and appellants, including over $4.5 million in retroactive awards from appeals.

As the Legion called for a permanent solution to pay military personnel in times of government shutdown, a records were set for the number of students who will receive American Legion Samsung Scholarships as well as the number of local post activities in support of the Be the One mission to prevent veteran suicide.
