Heading toward the 250th anniversary of the nation, the Legion helped hundreds of veterans and helped students pay for school.
As the July 4 celebration of the nation’s semiquincentennial neared, American Legion Department of Indiana Commander Ron Patterson rucked the final leg of his 250-mile mission as part of the Legion Family USA 250 Challenge, which benefits the Veterans & Children Foundation. Along the way, he raised more than $22,000 for the fund that helps families facing financial emergencies and supports training of American Legion service officers.
American Legion service officers and appeals reps were more than busy in June, helping veterans secure more than $2.2 million in retroactive benefits, free of charge, handling debt waiver cases and preparing more than 1,000 informal hearing presentations. It was also a big month for the Legion’s Operation Comfort Warriors, which delivered $38,300 in grants, and for 36 young people who earned more than $97,000 in American Legion national scholarships.
