How The American Legion supported veterans and youth in May

Legion Family members contributed to record-setting scholarships awarded, billions of dollars in veterans benefits claims and a surge in donations for the Veterans & Children Foundation.

During May, The American Legion honored those who made the ultimate sacrifice first and foremost. Throughout the month, the Legion also demonstrated its commitment to supporting veterans, mentoring children and youth, and much more. Among the highlights:

• American Legion service officers and appeals representatives have secured $14.8 billion in VA disability benefits and appeals awards for veterans and surviving spouses, a record pace for the current fiscal year.

• A record number of American Legion Legacy Scholarships worth over $1.7 million were announced by the Committee on Youth Education May 6. The recipients are children of military personnel who lost their lives on or after 9/11 or have become 50% or greater service-connected disabled.

• Nearly $20,000 was raised during May's Spring Meetings, surpassing $100,000 for the USA 250 Challenge. National Commander Dan K. Wiley set a goal of $150,000 for the Veterans & Children Foundation, as part of the challenge, which concludes July 4.
