Post 110 in Mt. Pleasant helped collect donated supplies for nearby Midland flood victims.

Members of The American Legion Family continue to help their neighbors in areas of Michigan ravaged by floodwaters last month.

Legion Post 110 in Mt. Pleasant, Mich., and local nonprofit Veterans4USA have collected donations twice over the past few weeks to help the nearby community of Midland. Donations have included clothing, water, food, cleaning supplies, toiletries, commercial garbage bags, brooms, mops, rubber boots, sun screen and bug spray, as requested by the United Way.

“We’ve had two collections so far, filled a pickup truck bed and 6x10 foot trailer twice,” Post 110 Commander Rich Young said. “We are monitoring the situation there and will decide next week if we will be doing another collection or not."

Millions of gallons of water emptied out of Wixom Lake when the Edenville Dam ruptured after days of heavy rain, forcing thousands from their homes.

“It’s been a terrible situation over there,” Young said. “People have lost everything. We just want to assist them in any way we can.”
