The Sons of The American Legion (SAL) National Executive Committee (NEC) had a historic weekend for their Spring Meetings, May 2-3 in Indianapolis.
The SAL NEC held their meetings in the National Executive Committee Room at American Legion National Headquarters, the first time the entire SAL NEC met in the storied chamber.
The SAL NEC’s Fall Meeting in 2020 emanated from the room but was conducted virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In that instance, then-SAL National Commander Clint Bolt, SAL National Adjutant Anthony Wright, and SAL National Judge Advocate Joseph Paviglianti were in Indianapolis for the meeting, while NECmen joined online.
Among the highlights of the 2026 SAL Spring Meetings:
· Before the weekend, SAL Past National Commander J.R. Stillwell received the inaugural National Legacy Award, named after Stilwell, “in recognition of exceptional and sustained service to the National Organization of the Sons of The American Legion, whose leadership and commitment have materially strengthened the organization and left a lasting legacy.” Watch Stillwell accepting the award, via FOX Illinois: https://www.foxillinois.com/american-legion/video_28248478-8986-5adb-aae3-6cb1117a629b.html.
· Legislative Commission Chairman Bernie Kessler encouraged the NEC and SAL members to sign up for The American Legion’s Voter Voice program. “Voter Voice is simple and effective in reaching Congress.” Legion Family can access Voter Voice through The American Legion Grassroots Action Center.
· Tyler Vanice, chairman of the SAL 100th Anniversary Ad Hoc Committee, called on the NEC to remind their detachments that work is already underway for the SAL’s centennial in 2032 and encouraged more SAL members to get involved. Development is also underway on a dedicated SAL centennial website, similar to the site created for the Legion’s centennial in 2019.
