Lance Corporal Jonathan Stroud Memorial Highway

A 5.0 mile stretch of 2-lane rural road, along Oklahoma State Highway 74, was designated a memorial highway in 2014, in memory of Lance Corporal Jonathan Fulton Stroud, of Cashion, Oklahoma. He entered the Marine Corps on April 14, 2008, was trained and assigned as a combat engineer, and stationed at Camp Lejeune at Jacksonville, North Carolina. He deployed overseas in 2009 and served with an engineer platoon of Company C, 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, II Marine Expeditionary Force, 2nd Marine Division, at Camp Dwyer, Afghanistan. Lance Corporal Stroud was killed in action on July 30, 2009, at age 20, by small arms fire during a firefight, while on patrol in Garmsir District, Helmand Province, in southern Afghanistan, during Operation Enduring Freedom. He was awarded the Purple Heart, for wounds received in combat with an enemy force, Combat Action Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, and Sea Service Deployment Ribbon. Also awarded the Rifle Marksman Medal. (Note: The town of Cashion, Oklahoma is located in both Kingfisher and Logan counties, in the central part of the state. It is located some 20 miles north of Oklahoma City (OKC), but The Logan County portion of Cashion is considered part of the Oklahoma City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population of Cashion was 851 in 2016.)
