Hawkins County War Memorial

Hawkins County War Memorial

American Legion Post 21, Rogersville, Tennessee was chartered in 1921 and has been located in three different areas since. The third building was build by Hawkins County in collaboration with the post. Our hero's were returning from WW ll, the county and the post wanted to honor our returning Veterans. A statue was considered but wasn't utilitarian, a building would live on and be a beacon to our veterans both living and deceased and the entire community. The building was erected in 1949, a two story brick building with 6,000 square ft. Post 21 resided in the building since its dedication (69 years). Membership grew from 15 to 1300 in a county with a population of 50,000. Over the years our older veterans passed on to Post Everlasting and membership leveled off to 300. The building would be condemned by today's codes. The post has sponsored "Save Our American Legion Post 21 Benefit" fund. The veterans and community are really behind it, companies and corporations have not come to the plate as of yet, after all the cornerstone identifies it as "Hawkins County War Memorial".
