505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division

The memorial/monument is located on Highway US 1 near the Wateree River travelling East toward Camden, South Carolina on the Invista Company (formerly DuPont) property adjacent to the Highway. It was erected to commemorate the "First Mass Parachute Drop" conducted by the US Army and executed by the 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment (commanded by Col. James M. Gavin) on this location, March 29, 1943. This regimental size drop was the first of this size and helped establish the Paratroops and Airborne as an integral component of the US Army.
