Scholarship opportunity for Boys State, Girls State attendees

Youth who have been selected to participate in a 2017 American Legion Boys State or Auxiliary Girls State program may be eligible for the Samsung American Legion Scholarship.

The Samsung American Legion Scholarship is available for high school juniors who participate in the current session of Boys State or Girls State and are direct descendants (or legally adopted children) of wartime veterans eligible for American Legion membership. The Samsung scholarship awards up to $10,000 for undergraduate studies (e.g., room and board, tuition and books), and each applicant is selected according to his or her involvement in school and community activities, academic record and financial need.

Students who qualify for and are interested in the Samsung scholarship can fill out an application online here. The online application must be completed and submitted prior to attending Boys or Girls State. Please note that the scholarship is restricted to high school juniors participating in the current session of Boys or Girls State; youth who participated in either program the previous year cannot apply or reapply for the scholarship.

A Boys and Girls State participant from each state is selected as a finalist for the Samsung American Legion Scholarship. During The American Legion’s Fall Meetings in October, the Committee on Youth Education will select the scholarship winners. All scholarship recipients will be notified of their award by a letter in late October.

“Each Samsung American Legion Scholarship winner is a student of outstanding merit who has taken the time to volunteer and make an impact in their community," said Mike Bredeck, chairman of the Legion's Committee on Youth Education. "The selection committee looks for balanced candidates who are well-rounded and who demonstrate, through their application, how a moving experience has had a significant impact on their life.”

The 2017 scholarship awardees will receive an all-expense paid recognition trip to Washington, D.C., in June of 2018. While in the nation's capital, the scholarship recipients will visit memorials and enjoy a meal with representatives from Samsung, The American Legion and senators from each of the scholar's home state.

Recipients of the scholarship are encouraged to become a part of the new Samsung American Legion Alumni Association to network with each other. Learn more at www.legion.org/samsungalumni.
