The National Park Service and American Legion John Ivens Post 42 in Williams, Ariz., have been responsible for the upkeep of the Grand Canyon Pioneer Cemetery since its dedication on May 30, 1928. In 1949, Post 42 erected a memorial at the cemetery to honor the men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice while serving their country. Present in the photo, from left to right, were then Department of Arizona Commander Lawrence Carr, Arizona National Executive Committeeman Ray Prochnou, Arizona District 7 Commander Jeff Ferris and Post 42 Commander Jack Verkamp.
