Your travel guide while in Reno

The American Legion will host its 99th national convention in “The Biggest Little City in the World” – Reno, Nev.

The convention will get underway Aug. 18 and conclude with the election of a new national commander on Aug. 24. While in Reno, Legion Family members will see beautiful scenery, casinos, eclectic stores, antique shops and museums, and have access to plenty of sight-seeing activities within a short drive.

Here are some ideas on how to spend your time in Reno before, during or after the convention:

Downtown Riverwalk District. The area features boutique shopping, entertainment venues, museums and dining experiences that celebrate the history and culture of Reno.

National Automobile Museum. The museum displays more than 200 cars, including those previously owned by entertainment legends such as Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley and John Wayne.

Lake Tahoe. The northern tip of Lake Tahoe is about a 50-minute drive from Reno. The 72-mile passageway around Lake Tahoe offers views of the serene lake and majestic mountains.

Additionally, there are more than 50 golf courses within a 90-minute drive of Reno, a children’s museum, an art museum, an outlet mall and over 100 new restaurants since the Legion was there in 2007.
