American Legion secures billions in benefits claims, gives grants to storm victims and more

The American Legion supported local communities, helped veterans secure VA benefits and much more during September.

Throughout September, The American Legion supported local communities with grants and scholarships, helped veterans secure the VA benefits they’ve earned, focused on Be the One and other mental health programs, and more.

A sampling:

·       Accredited American Legion service officers secured more than $2.2 billion in VA benefits at no cost to veterans in September.

·       Following severe storms the previous month, National Emergency Fund grants worth $17,479.43 were distributed in September to a post and two members in Indiana for flooding, and one individual in Washington state for wildfires.

·       During National Service Dog Month, 29 American Legion members and other veterans shared stories of why their service dogs are so important to their mental health.

·       A total of more than 91,000 emails have been sent to members of Congress via The American Legion’s Grassroots Action Center in support of the Take Care of America’s Veterans Act, as of Sept. 30.

National Headquarters has created a new resource kit for American Legion posts and departments that want to customize their own impact reports. Get started here with a how-to guide, downloadable documents and more.
