American Legion impact: $1 million in donations, feeding storm victims and more

During August, American Legion Riders collected funds for the VCF, Indiana posts supported their communities, service officers assisted veterans with claims and more.

The American Legion did not slow down one bit during the dog days of August. Across the nation, American Legion members continued to serve their communities, states and nation. A sampling:

• In Indiana, the American Legion Family responded when severe storms and flooding inundated their communities. For example, American Legion Post 260 in Portage fed more than 5,500 community members and first responders over six days by after a massive storm knocked out power throughout the community, including at the post.

• American Legion Riders collected $1,011,563 in donations during the Legacy Run for The American Legion Veterans & Children Foundation.

• During the three-day American Legion claims clinic Aug. 28-30 at the 107th National Convention in Louisville, service officers assisted 263 veterans.

• Scholarship money totaling $281,624.05 was disbursed during August to 126 recipients.
