On November 7, 2023, the Brocton Central School Honor Society provided a free breakfast for veterans at the John W. Dill American Legion Post 434 in Brocton, New York. Veterans from as far away as Lakewood and South Dayton attended the event, which was open to all of Chautauqua County veterans.
Earlier in the year, Mrs. Marsh contacted the John W. Dill American Legion Post and met with Commander Mattie McIntyre, Post Adjutant Stanley Kawski and Past American Legion 8th District Commander Henry Link to discuss the possibility of hosting the event should they win the grant that they had applied for from the Northern Chautauqua Community Foundation, and a tentative date was scheduled.
The students decorated the tables, greeted the veterans as they arrived and served breakfast to each while the faculty, staff and volunteers from the John W. Dill Post 434 Auxiliary cooked the breakfast. Each veteran was given a ‘Thank you’ gift by the students.
Commander McIntyre stated, “We anticipated 35-40 veterans but over 50 veterans came for breakfast." She went on to say, “Many of the veterans who came commented on how polite and courteous the students were and that it was refreshing to see such a group of young people who still care. We would like to thank the students and staff of Brocton Central School Honor Society."
Commander McIntyre presented the Brocton Central School Honor Society with a plaque provided by the Chautauqua County American Legion Vice Commander Peter Ochocki and Faculty Advisor Chrissy Marsh with a Certificate of Appreciation from the John W. Dill American Legion Post 434 for their dedication to the veterans and our community.
